Warangal: Protests and processions continued in the district on Wednesday demanding serious punishment to the accused in the New Delhi rape incident. Separate rallies were conducted by Life Insurance Corporation of India employees and students of Kakatiya Medical College, ASM Women’ Degree College and different other colleges here on the day.
The college students, displaying placards, have taken out a massive protest rally from Public Gardens to the district collectorate where they staged a demonstration in support of their demand. They raised slogans against the Delhi government. Speaking on the occasion, several students and lecturers demanded the Central government to enact stringent laws to punish the perpetrators of violence against women.
Those who commit acts like rape should be hanged, they asserted. The incidents of violence against women have been on the rise all through the nation and urgent steps were needed to curb such trend, said Dr. K Swaroopa, the vice principal of ASM Women’s Degree College.
Even after decades since the nation achieved Independence, women in the country were not safe. The state and central governments should immediately come out with laws that would act against those who endanger the lives of women, she noted. The reinforcement of laws was the need of the hour, noted a lecturer named Sridevi. The protesting students and teachers have paid tributes to the victim of the New Delhi rape incident on the occasion.
A large number of LIC employees have taken out a candle light rally from the LIC office to B R Ambedkar statue where they maintained a silent vigil in honour of the New Delhi rape incident victim. The LIC employee’s union leader Nagabhushanam speaking on the occasion stressed on the need for gender sensitization and equality. The nation should change its mindset towards women and their rights and well being, he noted.
